Here’s The Story Of One Tiny Blog That Drove In

I know some of you may have heard this story before and some have even accused us of “cheating” by using PPC traffic or traffic exchanges; but let me tell you what really happened since we were the ones that actually did it, the success we saw and why we completely screwed up and missed out on THOUSANDS of visitors and a chunk of money. So, let’s get started. First of all, the actual number was... 19,860 Visitors It all started when we watched this dude do a case study using fancy keyword tools, article writing software and link building tools to get search engine rankings and traffic. The case study was pretty well done, but we realize not everybody have the opportunity nor the cashflow to pay for these super ninja tools. Up until this point, we had always used Wordpress on our own hosting accounts for virtually all of our sites and been using Social Bookmarking and other web 2.0 strategies to generate traffic to our sites. We had been on the “band wagon” and talked about the effectiveness of Web 2.0 marketing on forums and in blogs. But, around the same time a lot of people were screaming about the lack of effectiveness of Social Bookmarking; and Squidoo had been “hit” by Google a few months prior so the validity of Web 2.0 was in serious question. And to be quite honest, even though we used Social Media to market our sites and saw results on a daily basis, many of our techniques were “theories” we’d been messing with... and we really had no clue if we could just use ONE SMALL PORTION of our strategy to make it all work. So, we decided to do a little test. Sort of like the fella who used all of those super fancy tools to do his case study, but with a twist. And when we finally decided to get it going... We Were Scared Shitless And for good reason, because we actually chose to do this in front of a “live audience”… and to be honest, we had NO IDEA if it was going to work at all! Even though we put up a brave face telling people “Yeah, we can drive traffic at will!” And if that wasn’t bad enough, we told people that we were going to use 100% free tools and resources with no access to our regular super-ninja tools that help us automate much of the process. Instead we told people we were only going to use:
So you can probably understand why we were worried… But our worry turned from near panic into excited disbelief when we started posting content to our blog, and… On 'Day 4' We Pulled In Over 1000 Unique Visitors... ...using only a fraction of our simple techniques. And imagine our surprise when we realized we had only used 3 of the bookmarking services to bookmark our content. This was working WAY beyond our imagination. Here’s a screen shot from Day 4:
Unfortunately we totally screwed up as we didn’t expect to get this kind of traffic so fast and completely failed to monetize the site… AT ALL! It Actually Worked TOO FAST! It would have been easy to get cocky and say “see, we told you…”, but in the back our minds we had seeds of doubt, with that "little voice" saying… Was this by accident? Did we just get lucky? I mean it could have been just luck. Maybe we just hit the jackpot and picked the right subject that spiked traffic that day. Stuff like that happens on occasion. So, this is what happened next… We decided to continue using only 3 of the bookmarking sites and post some content each day (this process literally took us less than 30 minutes to do this each day). So, we decided to wait a few days to see if it was a “fluke”, and let the initial spike settle before posting any more results. Four days later, on day 8, we had over 1400 visitors! And in the 3 days in between, we had pulled in and recorded nearly 6000 unique visitors to the blog! Here’s a screen shot from day 5 (since we didn’t take one from day 8…):
And by Day 5 we had finally gotten some AdSense on the site and earned over $20 just from untargeted AdSense ads that day. Have to be honest... it stings to think that we let all that traffic flow through the site without finding targeted affiliate / PPA programs to promote. Not bad for two bozos who “claimed” they could turn on traffic at will. And like we said, this was done with completely free tools and less than a handful bookmarking sites. And when you actually average out all the traffic over the 3 week period when we performed this case study, we got over 900 unique visitors to the site PER DAY! (By the way, we did eventually use all 6 bookmarking sites… but that was after the first 14 days of the case study had already passed.) So, Let’s CUT THE CRAP And Keep Grounded In Reality We’ve both heard of people driving tons of traffic like this using all kinds of underhanded tools and make it sound like they did it with a single click of a button. And we both know that not every niche can drive this kind of traffic. And you know what, that’s reality. In fact, you should generally choose more competitive markets in order to leech traffic from your competitors so you can make more money (the competitive markets are not as hard as you think to get traffic for when you know what to look for). The problem we had when we posted the results was of course that the people reading it are jaded (typical Internet Marketers... if you know what we mean), and those who were following the case study were saying: You Guys Are Full Of It! This Stuff Doesn’t Work In My Market Really? It could be true… But the thing is, Steven’s wife picked the niche for the case study… so it was a completely random niche. And day 5, when we got over 2300 visitors in a single day, the visitors came in from a super obscure blog post on… Fast Food... People were still not satisfied, and said we used underhanded trickery using multiple Social Bookmarking accounts, voting up our own content, you're driving traffic with PPC... blah… blah… blah. Where you can plainly see that 14000 people came to our site from organic traffic (Google Search) over a 3-week period of time. And the site that drove in the 2nd most traffic was Digg.
